Is anyone aware of any radio sales training DVD's that are available? Several years ago the station had a series on VHS from Jason Jennings but it is fairly outdated. I would be interested in something that might be out there.

    Hi Greg,

You might try Paul Weyland.com. Paul has a great set of DVD's for sales training that are actually fun to listen to and have great practical application. I have been using his training videos for years with great success.

Ah, Jason Jennings..."Tell Me, Sell Me" ... I remember him well. I'd recommend you contact Radio Sales Cafe member Jeff Dostal about Warner Concepts' Marketing Firepower as originally provided to radio stations for sales and advertising training, if it is still available. I'd also recommend studying advertising through the eyes of Roy Williams. Pick up a copy of his "Most Common Mistakes in Advertising" DVD for starters. Under $20 and worth its weight in gold. Watch it with your crew, watch it with your clients and prospects. They may also have some radio-specific training series available there - you'll just have to poke around. I think it was called the "Secret Formulas School of Advertising" or something along those lines. Based on his Wizard of Ads trilogy. BTW, the audio versions of those books (on CD from WAP) are entertaining and informative...great for listening in the car...short segments that you can enjoy in any order. Highly recommended!

I, too, have heard very good things about Paul Weyland.

Talking with salespeople who have spent a day with him and having read an occasional sales article, my impression is that his lessons are packed useful information and suggestions for application.

He seems to combine good sales practice with research and copy ideas likely to benefit the advertiser. Would not hesitate to recommend him, based on what I've heard and read.

Roy helped launch a part of his business with Radio's help, trading his audio, then video training tapes for voluntary air schedules to promote his "Wizard" books. Great deal for all. Still have mine. Lately he has been marketing these types of things - some of them abbreviated, some updated (I believe) - via the Wizard Academy Press website. https://www.wizardacademypress.com/Scripts/default.asp There are even some freebies up there. Worth a visit. I might also mention RSC member Jeff Dostal and his employer, broadcaster Norton Warner, and their series of training videos now being marketed at www.MarketingFirepower.info. You can search here for Jeff and I'm sure he'll be glad to provide additional information, maybe a peek through the back door even. There's also a company called P1 Selling - they offer online training to radio and (grrrrrrrr) cable TV sales reps. Good stuff, what little I've seen. And I can't blame them for selling to the competition, but I don't have to like it either... :>) Zimmer Radio Group in Missouri also offers excellent training materials to its sales reps. A little bit of Chris Lytle, Roy Williams, Jim Williams, Michael Corbett, etc. -- all digested, distilled, and presented in their own teaching format. If you have some friends at ZRG or care to Google them, you can likely find out more. There's lots of good material available, tons of it. The trick is to acquire the information and then put it into practice. And that's a lifelong process!

P1 Selling is an on line training site that has over 180 modules. It is real world stuff. Check out their demo campus at this link. http://p1selling.com/demo
