WHAT DO NEW SALESPEOPLE NEED?

Can anyone help me with some research?

SALES PEOPLE:  Think back to your first job as a radio advertising salesperson.  What do you wish you knew then that you know now?   What information or training should you have had.  What was your biggest fear, obstacle or problem in your first months, and do you feel you received enough proper training when you first started?

SALES MANAGERS:  What would you like new sales people to know when they start their new job?   What information, tools or training would be helpful to new hires or those that are in their first months as a radio sales person.  Finally, do you feel you have enough time to spend giving the proper training to new hires?

    Thanks!

    Dale,

Wow... no comments. I hope you received a few messages with some feedback. I have not been in radio advertising sales so I can't answer the way you hoped. If you don't mind I would like to answer based on general sales and management experience, would that be okay? I guess I will answer for you, yes.

     Salesman

    1. I wish I would have know it was going to be a career in sales. I would have looked and learned things differently. It seemed I just had a sales job I was making money at but did not think about a lifetime career.

    2. More training on listening and business in general so I could identify with the real problems owners want to solve.

    3. I had enough training.

    Manager

    1. I believe in them. I hired them because I know they can get it done. I also want them to understand the compensation plan and what is expected of them related to activity and results.

    2. My guess would be more understanding of online advertising as a competitor. The days of comparing to print and other radio competitors is over. Now they need to compete with email, social media, web site SEO and directory advertisements. If they ignore this area it will be noticed by the savvy buyer.

    3. This one is more industry specific, but I will say creating an detailed on boarding process will help you utilize other people in the company to help train a new person.
