First Person Script Ideas needed!

  • November 11, 2011 9:16 AM PST

I have a local, and loyal client who is wanting to do some first person ads.  I have been trying to come up with some first person script ideas, but have been having writers block!  The client is a 2 man welding shop that specializes in anything and everything you need welded or fabricated!  Aluminum welding, steel...you name it.  They do on the road or on the farm calls, and also have a shop as well.  The owner's partner is actually the one who taught him how to weld!   The owner isnt to excited about having his own voice on the radio, but his partner is ready and waiting for a first person ad.   Any good ideas out there for first person script?

Some of the best things in life are handed down. Hi this is ____ with _______. Thru the years, I have handed down my welding and fabrication experience to _____. Together we can weld and fabricate just about anything you need.

Then go from there on what all they can do. maybe throw in " Have Welder- Will Travel" when talking about the on the road and on the farm calls.

Its not much but maybe it will help

Don't have a full script idea, but one thing that comes to mind is a play off

of the Cranberry ads with the two guys in the bog.  Maybe you could have

two of them welding something and one being proud of how he's taught

the other. They could point out what makes their welds better, the service

better and however their pricing works, why it's worth it.  Do you have any

kind of tag line....like....Brand X Brothers Welding Shop, we help hold the world together!

Like I said, I'm leaving this before 6 AM and it may only be half baked.

Are you any good at interviewing?  We rarely have much luck with writing a 1st person ad.  It ALWAYS sounds read, and scripted.

If you have some interview skills, and can dedicate some time to the editing process, you'll usually strike gold by just sitting down and talking to them with a mic between you.  No scripts.  Get the story they want to tell in their own words.  You can edit out the fluff and get the gold after.

For YEARS I had a client who I'd chase around his store with a Marantz in my hand, while he just talked about his new products, or anything exciting he had coming up.  Then I would spend hours cutting them down into a campaign for the season.  Yes, it was a lot of work, but they were distinct, they sounded natural, and they were heard - because they stood out from scripted ads.

The best first person script is no script at all.  Just let them tell their story, and figure out how to cut it down to length later.

    Chris has it.

Lots of good questions that can provide natural answers.

Also I like Jessica's idea - if you can imagine it, we can weld it.

Let us know how it turns out.

Chris Pollard is accurate in his reply....Allow me to expand on his reply a bit, by adding that it's not WHAT is spoken in the ad, as much as HOW it's spoken.

In the world of radio, listeners are used to hearing the "ear-candy" of slickly-produced, flawless ads.

However, when a business owner who does not have a "radio voice" speaks passionately about his own business, it cuts through the "norm" of radio ads and "sticks out like a sore thumb" in a GREAT way!....No professional production person can convey a business service to the heart of the people like the owner, himself...and when a "normal voice" comes on the air, the unique difference in sound DEMANDS attention from the listener.---- it's Win/Win!......Good Luck!
