This week's poll question may be a minor point, but it's a question that's been on my mind since the beginning of the year, and that is: How do you pronounce 2010? "Twenty-ten" or "Two thousand ten"? How are your newscasters and DJ's pronouncing it? Hoping to reach some sort of a consensus here. . . . Thanks in advance for your replies!

    20-10, not 2010

We're from the Roman Numeral camp and we asked the same question the other day. Is it M-M-X or Double M-X?

Twenty-ten...12 years ago we we all saying nineteen ninety eight...correct? We were not saying One thousand nine hundred and ninety eight! Problem is...we just came from the decade of 00-09 to say Twenty 0'nine or Twenty 0'five sounded like the year was of Irish ancestry. It makes perfect sense to me and our team to say "Twenty-ten"

I hear "twenty-ten" far more often than "two thousand ten."

My bet is "twenty-ten" wins. It's shorter, easier for Americans.

20-10 only makes sense. However, I hear many more, including network news people, saying "Two thousand ten."

Well for the past 100 years or so, we were in the 1900's, and we said 19-65... 19-72 etc. Therefore for us it is 20-10, 20-11 etc.

I prefer "Twenty-ten." I just think it flows better.

But the one thing that I was desperately hoping for was that people would drop the "and" now that we are into 2010, but I've already heard people saying, "Two Thousand AND Ten."

Sorry, pet peeve of mine. Please drop the "AND!"

After a short discussion in a News Department meeting, we have decided to say "Twenty Ten."

20-10 seems to be the easiest and most accepted.

Thank you all for your replies so far. It seems like the consensus is "Twenty-ten," and the explanations provided by Daryl McIntire and Chris Rolando as to why this would be the preferred pronunciation make sense . . . now I just have to stop saying, "Two thousand ten" and switch to "Twenty-ten"!

"Twenty-ten". We don't say "Ninteen hundred and ten" or "One thousand, nine hundred and ten", so why say "Two thousand and ten"?

Here at Time Capsule, our "answer" jingles are using 20-10, and we're reasonably sure that'll stick. I'm more concerned about how we'll handle the year 10115. Will it be "ten thousand one fifteen", "one-oh-one fifteen", or "one hundred one fifteen"? But that's a Friday Poll for another day. Or eon...

You're right, twenty O nine sounds like the time is 8:40. I say twenty-ten. I hope everybody on RSC has a Perfect '10!
