Should I Make the Move

    Hello All,

Let me preface this discussion with I haven't been offered the job yet but they've given me the choice on whether or not I would like to move forward with the interview process.

I sell radio advertising and when I put my mind to it I'm good. Really good. I have been scouted via LinkedIn and started the interview process with School Space Media, it's a media company solely dedicated to selling advertising within high school sports. They currently have 32 prep schools on board and they've expanded into a couple of new markets. They sell things like Fan boards, banners, broadcast commercials on their online feed and they're working on a mobile app.

They offer a base which I don't know what it is yet plus a 40% commission. I like the idea of selling this kind of marketing because the company also gives the school 50% of what we sell. It's a sales staff of 4 right now and they're looking to move to 6. I'm in line to be one of the 6.

My question to all of you is would this be a good move? Can I get to my 6 figure income goal by 2017 within a field such as this? I like the fact that it's not an over saturated media yet because it's at the ground floor. I also like the idea of being with a company from the beginning.

Any advice would be appreciated. I want to share to that I just lack the passion for radio sales anymore. I hate how long the process is. I hate that it's less tangible because quite frankly we all know that that's a lot of the reason that people still use the paper to advertise, it's because they can see it. Also, it could be a subconscious lack of passion because I know that my company doesn't believe in me or really it's that they just don't care, and I can honestly say that due to terrible happenings that occurred this summer and that's when the true colors of my company showed.

Anyway, Any and All advice is welcome.

    Thanks!

Only sell things you love.  Don't move if you don't love sports, don't like to deal with schools, or don't love fundraising.  Remember you can present all you want to a school, but because the people putting the promo together are usually parents, coaches and teachers, they will need a lot of assistance and rely on you a lot.  They are doing this as a fundraising opportunity, not a business decision, so you'll need to be very patient when they drop the ball on deadlines and communication.

I believe that stiff competition is everywhere, so I wouldn't worry about that aspect.  There's always going to be someone who wants to eat your lunch, but that's what makes us better sales people; we too have to learn to overcome our own objections!

Lastly, if you want to sell tangible goods, that can be fun!  For instance if you like to shop for gifts, or are a hunter, etc....how about being a wholesale rep for a large company?  This way you could see stores on a regular basis, show them your line, strategize success and place the order.  Tangible is fun; especially when you're burning out on a long sales process.

    Good luck!

    Thank you!!

    That may be an idea.

Is there anyway to make the radio sales process a bit shorter? Is there a way to get things rolling quicker or is this just how it goes and always will? I have started utilizing technology like Skype and various internet chats and it seems to work well. Any thing else?

Radio will never be one of those, hey I have a product, you need it let's get you rolling, if not on to the next one, type sales process correct?
