Happy Friday, everyone!
Earlier this week, I came across an article written by Geoffrey James on How to Motivate with Bonuses. I thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss in a Friday poll, so here is this week's question:
What bonuses are offered to your station's sales team? What is the best bonus you’ve ever received? How did you earn it?
Looking forward to reading your replies!
absolutely none!
a few years all acheivment bonuses were withdrawn, very motivational.
About 4 years ago, I won a laptop for hitting goals for the year, I still use it!
happy friday all
Bonuses offered to sales team: This example is from when I was in the Cellular Phone Industry between 1997-2001. The best bonuses I had for a sales team were the bonuses that we had for all employees. We were a group of 35 employees with about 12 sales people. We set up quarterly and annual goals for new customers, retention of customers and profit. Each employee could earn up to $400 per quarter and $1600 at year-end. This kept everyone in the game of the most important targets we were working toward and created support toward sales and from sales to customer service. It did not discriminate by the person’s income, it created equality among all of the team. We did this for four years with growth targets each year that were challenging. I can’t remember the numbers of achievement but I do remember we did not leave much bonus on the table.
The best bonus I received was unexpected. Our company was sold after growing if for a venture capital group for a solid profit. When I opened the FedEx package from the company after the sale was complete I found a check for one years salary that helped fund my sons education at San Jose State University plus other things.
How we earned the bonus: We earned it by hitting our growth goals sooner than expected and making a bunch of money for the ownership group. Why I earned it is more important. My boss, friend, mentor and leader had privately negotiated a deal with the ownership group when they initially purchased us to take care of his management team with this type of bonus if we hit XXX type of numbers. He did not have to tell us what was on the line, we just know something would be there and trusted him. He had our back and cared for all employees. He pushed us hard but never lost sight that it was his people that did the work to help him be successful. We had been sold twice previously with little reward. He was not going to let that happen again and he didn’t. He went on to start his own company and after selling it helped some of his key managers and employees collect a nice retirement.

We offer bonuses based on performance each month. If a sales associate hits 10% above their monthly goal bonus start to kick in. We offer bonus at 10%, 20% and 25% over a monthly goal.
As a sales manager I receive bonus at the same levels just for station and personal performance.
Biggest bonus I ever received was not in radio, but it was $3000 for reaching a yearly goal.
Currently, no bonuses here. Typically, they're to confusing to work i.e., if your company target to reach bonus is $50,000 a month it doesn't count unless you exceeded every smaller goal for the entire cluster.
The biggest bonus I ever got was $3,500 one month. I double checked to make sure it was not a mistake.
