Marketing Yourself

We expect our clients to have a marketing plan and budget, and hope they use at least part of it to buy advertising from us. But what about us? Shouldn't we market ourselves?

One of my goals for 2013 is to market my business. I have some ideas (a Facebook business page, advertising in my local Chamber of Commerce's newsletters, for example). I would love to know how you market yourself, and what has been most successful for you. Thank you!

If you're relatively new to the area, join, join, join! Get on a chamber committee, Young Professionals, charity drive, whatever. Find your passion and build your list of friends while you pursue it. One of the best things I ever did was to get involved in my local downtown association. Preserving and revitalizing our business core was something I strongly believed in and I received a lot of publicity for my work. That, in turn, led to recognition among business leaders as someone who really cared. So, when I switched careers to radio sales, I already had built in credibility with my clients.

That being said, it also doesn't hurt to make yourself stand out in other ways. I drive a bright yellow FJ Cruiser with Biz Bldr on my plates.
